Hi, I’m Al Visram — and welcome to Fine Balance Wellness.
I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
I’ve worked in mental health for more than a decade, beginning with an internship working with children with autism during my undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta. After graduating with my bachelor of science in psychology, I worked in the field of peer support and critical incident stress management for a local municipality.
In 2017, I received the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Difference Maker Award, where I was recognized nationally for teaching Mental Health First Aid to members of my community as well as for workplace wellness initiatives making a difference in mental health. This acknowledgement meant a lot to me. So, in 2018, I decided to go back to school, following my passion for mental health, and completed my master’s in counselling psychology from the City University of Seattle.
No matter where you come from or what experiences you’ve had, you are welcome at Fine Balance Wellness. I support clients from all walks of life. My specialties include grief and loss, trauma, depression, anxiety, and day-to-day life challenges. I believe in meeting my clients where they are and working together to find a path forward. Looking after your mental health is equally as important as your physical health. I am a passionate advocate for improving our collective understanding and appreciation of mental health and mental illness.

What’s in a name?
The name Fine Balance Wellness is in honour of my father. For more than 20 years, he operated a catering business specializing in fine, healthy foods called Fine Balance Foods. My dad’s business was built on a foundation of integrity, family, and community. He genuinely wanted to make a positive difference by making nutritious, gourmet food accessible.
It is his legacy that I am inspired to carry on through Fine Balance Wellness. My dad always made sure that nobody went hungry. He believed in dignity and care for all. Rooted in the same values of integrity and community, I strive to make a difference in the lives of my clients and their families. This is part of the reason that I offer a sliding scale for my services, to make counselling accessible for everyone. It’s also why I’m passionate about giving back and engaging in volunteer opportunities across the city of Edmonton.
